Physical Features: He's often told that he's exceptionally beautiful, even by Elven standards. Though small and seemingly fragile of stature, he's well sculpted; the curves and contours of his form graceful and pleasing in proportions. His facial features, while undoubtedly young, are stunning. The lines of his face are sharp, delicate, and strikingly exotic. The overall effect is a youth of breathtaking beauty, which has, sadly, resulted in much unwanted attention.
Positive Personality Traits: Sensitive, compassionate, loving, innocent, trusting, loyal, honest, optimistic, playful, intelligent, creative.
An'nai is highly sensitive to others, with a deeply compassionate nature. He's loving to even those he's never met; willing to lend a helping hand to complete strangers and trying his best to help them in any way he can. Unlike most Dark Elves, his eyes are alight with true innocence, giving him a look of open honesty that tends to win over most people he meets in an instant. He can also be very playful at times, bringing smiles to even the gloomiest of faces.
While his young and innocent appearance is genuine, it often leads people to the false conclusion that he lacks intelligence, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Though naïve, An'nai possesses a sparkling intellect that drinks in everything around him. That, combined with his natural compassion and sensitivity, makes him especially empathetic. Occasionally his intellect and wisdom will shine through when least excepted, tending to surprise those around him. Along with being surprisingly intelligent, An'nai is also very creative; artistic. He can play any instrument he gets his hands on despite his inability to read music. Songs just come naturally to him, it's part of who he is. He's also a skilled painter and he uses his magical nature to enhance his paintings, creating stunning images of people, creatures, landscapes and ideas.
With emotions so strong, he's highly sensitive to other people and more likely to be understanding than most. He feels everything very deeply and so is hesitant to do anything that might hurt or offend someone else. This sometimes has the unfortunate effect if making him seem docile. If he has managed to hurt someone, he'll do everything he can to make up for this, his conscience demands it.
Despite his seemingly delicate appearance, there is a strong resilience in An'nai that makes him surprisingly stubborn and resistant when pushed too hard and too far. That strong stubborn streak made him a terrible slave regardless of his inherent submissive disposition.
Negative Personality Traits: Naïve, easily hurt, strong emotions, unsure, nervous, shyness, shame, low self-esteem, self-doubt, too ready to forgive, an unwitting tease.
Though possessing high intelligence, An'nai is often too naïve for his own good; putting trust in people when he ought not to. Because of his high sensitivity and acute emotions, he tends to get hurt very easily and, once hurt, it takes him a long time to recover. Due to his past he can be extremely nervous around other people despite his strong desire to make new friends. This, coupled with his shyness, often means he'll sit alone in some corner of a crowded room with his shoulders hunched, too afraid to go up and talk to someone.
As transparent on his young features as his innocence is his shame. Shame for his past and what he once was - and still is in his mind. He tends to believe he doesn't deserve to be around people, thinking there's something horribly wrong with him. Because of this An'nai suffers from intense feelings of low-esteem; he doubts his own self-worth and will often let others take advantage of him or use him in any fashion because he feels he's worth little, if anything at all. Because of this he will readily forgive those who've committed grievous wrongs against him, resulting in his getting hurt repeatedly.
Despite his caring nature, An'nai is still a Dark Elf. And like most Dark Elves, he has within him the capacity to feel extreme hatred, though it's rare for him. Loving though he might be, he does have fits of temper and raging emotions. It is very difficult to earn An'nai's hatred, but if a person does somehow manage to do so, it is permanent. An'nai will rarely change his opinions about a person who's earned him enmity.
One other trait that tends to put An'nai into frequent dilemmas is his naturally playful nature. Combined with his beauty it can sometimes make him a terrible, if unwitting, tease. It's gotten him in trouble with quite a few would-be suitors.
Misc. Quirks: An'nai abhors meat of any kind. Just the sight, or smell, of it makes him physically ill. He refuses to eat any sort of meat be it beef, pork, poultry or fish; he will not touch it.
He has a tendency to fidget and rub the back of his neck when he's nervous, shifting anxiously from foot to foot. Because of his past he'll often lower his eyes to the floor when talking to someone, thinking himself inferior. He'll also run his fingers through his hair whenever he's feeling afraid or anxious; it's unknown where or why he developed this habit.
Markings: None
Unusual Traits: His thick waist length hair is an unusual shade of black, it resembles the night's sky in that it glimmers as if woven from threads of midnight. His entire being has an almost luminous glow to it, even his ebon skin, it only serves to enhance his startling beauty.
An'nai isn't a typical bard. With emotions so unusually powerful, they make the air around him shift and change, resonating alluring music to fit his mood and the words his sings. No melody is ever the same. His emotions cause the energy to swirl around and within him, mingling with his already strong magical nature to create an effective, and sometimes devastating, power which he unleashes through his beautifully haunting voice.
Items of Value: Around his neck, and hidden beneath his collar at all times, is a small, glittering blue stone dangling from a silvery choker. If used by Zahan'naji, the stone will glow and emit music depending on his desires. It is another method he occasionally uses for creating music to go along with his verse. It is only used when his emotions do not run strong enough to pull music from the world around him.
In several small pouches clipped to his belt, he carries several items of interest. A small gnomish listening crystal, several small, delicate glass orbs - if broken they'll temporarily daze and stun those they're thrown at in a blinding flash of light - and tiny silver darts holding injections of a potent poison that will temporarily paralyze most opponents for until to 30 minutes.
Brief History: An'nai was left with an adopted family when he was just an infant. All he knows of himself is his birth name, Zahan'naji. Anything else of his history is unknown to him, including his surname. He was raised along side three older step-siblings; a brother and two sisters. He was only a small child when his step-mother was murdered. An'nai and his three siblings were sent away. His elder brother was given to an order of assassins for training and An'nai was sold into slavery. It is unknown where his two sisters were sent.
An'nai lived as a slave for a number of years before he got desperate enough to kill his master in his sleep, an act completely counter to the young Dark Elf's nature and one that still haunts him. The boy wandered for a long time, living by himself on the streets of whatever city he happened into next. Eventually he attached himself to a traveling caravan, going relatively unnoticed for a couple months. During this period he learned the rudiments of cloth and leather craft from the few friends he managed to make as well as basic survival skills. After a particularly unpleasant encounter with the caravan's leader, An'nai was forced to flee.
Alone again, he wandered from place to place, looking for any job he could get. It was during this time he was approached by a strange Wood Elven girl. He followed her back to her House, where he was told her 'family' would have steady work for him, and walked right into slavery again. How he got away from his most recent owners is not something An'nai will readily discuss with anyone, though from the way he almost constantly looks over his shoulder it is probably safe to assume that he was not freed.
Presently, An'nai remains alone; once again wandering from place to place, but with a detectable note of urgency, as if he's on the run. For anyone who sees him, they might note that his eyes always bear a dark, haunted shadow which never fades.
